Abstract

Introduction: Sigmoid colon malignant tumors and inguinal hernias are frequent conditions, but it is very rare to find a sigmoid neoplasm contained an inguinoscrotal hernia. Diagnosis and treatment of this condition is a challenge to oncological surgeons. The paper presents the first report of this condition in Cuba.

Objective: Provide a detailed description of the actions to be taken to treat a sigmoid tumor contained in an inguinoscrotal hernia.

Clinical case: A male 70-year-old patient with an initial diagnosis of left inguinoscrotal hernia of long evolution reported weight loss and constipation in the last months. Examination led to the diagnosis of a tumor contained in the hernia and surgical treatment was applied. The patient evolved satisfactorily.

Conclusions: In case of suspicion of a colon neoplasm contained in an inguinoscrotal hernia, use should be made of all the available diagnostic tools and perform the surgical treatment of both conditions in compliance with the principles of oncological surgery.

Key words: inguinal hernia, neoplasm, cancer, sigmoid colon.
