Abstract

Introduction: The Cuban population is considered to be aged, and aging is directly proportional to the occurrence of cancer. Elderly patients are more prone to presenting complications during the oncospecific treatment due to the physiological changes typical of their age. It is recommended to perform a comprehensive geriatric assessment of cancer patients aged over 70 years.

Objective: Describe the tools most commonly used for comprehensive geriatric assessment with the purpose of predicting complications during chemotherapy.

Methods: A review was conducted in PUBMED, SciELO and Lilacs using the key terms comprehensive geriatric assessment, oncogeriatrics, cancer. A total 50 articles were reviewed from which 37 were selected for being more directly related to the review topic.

Discussion: The importance of CGA for oncological patients is well known, but its application is still not systematic, possibly in relation to the time for its performance. The CGA includes several questionnaires applied to patients to collect fundamental information to determine the patient's frailty and take the corresponding decisions, as well as predict the possible complications of the chemotherapy treatment.

Conclusions: Awareness of the application of these tools makes it possible to predict the complications of oncological treatment that elderly patients may present, thus individualizing behavior.

Key words: comprehensive geriatric assessment; oncogeriatrics; cancer.
