Abstract

Oxidative stress is a biochemical imbalance between the free radicals and the antioxidant defense mechanisms of cells. Cancer is a disease which induces oxidative stress, due to the metabolic alterations of neoplastic cells, malnutrition and oncospecific treatments. The use of antioxidants could prevent its effects on normal cells, but removing the damaging effects of oxidative stress on neoplastic cells would also prevent programmed cell death, thus reducing the efficacy of treatments. The purpose of the study was to present the benefit / damage of the intake of antioxidant agents by oncological patients. A search was conducted in the databases PubMed, MedLine, BioMed Central and SciELO. A selection was made of review articles about the topic published in the last five years, as well as classic reviews and meta-analyses evaluating the use of antioxidant supplements during oncological treatment.

Key words: cancer; oxidative stress; antioxidants; ozone.
