Abstract

Kaposi sarcoma is the most prevalent malignant neoplasm among patients living with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. The purpose of the study was to describe the main clinical, anatomopathological, diagnostic and therapeutic characteristics of this condition. A search was conducted in the databases PubMed, SciELO and Lilacs about the diagnosis and treatment of Kaposi sarcoma in the last 20 years. A selection was made of the main treatment guides issued by international Oncology and Infectology societies. Kaposi sarcoma is a multifocal lymphatic neoplasm derived from the vascular endothelium infected by human herpesvirus 8. Primary diagnosis is based on the form of clinical presentation and anatomopathological characteristics. The purpose of treatment is to achieve control of the disease with the use of antiretroviral therapy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and local therapies. Knowledge about elements related to the diagnosis and treatment of Kaposi sarcoma patients will lead the medical team to implement the best treatment strategies aimed at improving the survival and quality of life of these patients.
