Usefulness of Combined Imaging Techniques for Diagnosis of Benign Mesenchymal Lesions

Authors

Abstract

Introduction: The discovery of soft tissue tumors is clinical, initially. Imaging and pathology are used for differentiating a benign tumor from a malignant one. At least one third of benign tumors are lipomas.

Objective: To determine the usefulness of the combined use of simple radiography, ultrasound and computed tomography in the diagnosis of mesenchymal lesions of superficial soft tissues.

Method: An observational and prospective study was carried out in patients with mesenchymal soft tissue tumors, treated at Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital from July 2018 to July 2019 (n = 20).

Results: Ninety-five percent of the tumors were classified as benign by the combination of ultrasound and computed tomography. By histology, 100% were benign. In the examination of validity, in the combination of the imaging variables, the sensitivity was 95.5% and the positive predictive value was 100%. The other indicators of the usefulness of a diagnostic means could not be estimated because there were cells in the contingency table with a zero value.

Conclusions: The combined use of ultrasound and computed tomography was useful for the diagnosis of soft tissue mesenchymal lesions in the series studied.

Keywords: soft tissue tumors; mesenchymal tumors; ultrasound.
