Medullary thyroid carcinoma: about a case
Abstract
Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) is a rare malignant neuroendocrine tumor that originates in the parafollicular cells of the thyroid. With the aim of describing the clinical and pathological characteristics of a case of medullary thyroid carcinoma, a 35-year-old female patient is presented with an increase in volume in the left anterior region of the neck, with a six-month evolution. On physical examination, she had a firm, non-tender nodule in the left lobe of the thyroid. Fine-needle aspiration cytology was performed and reported a suspicion of medullary carcinoma. Finally, the diagnosis was confirmed with the biopsy. Medullary carcinomas are rare tumors with nonspecific symptoms and a highly variable cytological and histological appearance. For this reason, it is vital to understand its clinical manifestations and anatomopathological characteristics, which facilitate timely diagnosis and treatment, thereby improving the quality of life for affected patients.
